Brooks was here (the Shawshank Redemption)
Being in a cage is an incredibly humbling and dehumanizing experience. Spend even a week in a cage, and your life is forever different. I can't imagine what it's like to spend years in one.

I got to see Bela and the guys at Point State Park in Pittsburgh years ago - and it was a free concert no less! It is so nice to listen to a band in which every member is a virtuoso.

They're an amazing group of musicians and I've always been a fan.. I hope I get to see them live someday including a solo by Victor Wooten (bassplayer).
Universal Health Care? Illegal aliens get it, why not us?
>> ^MarineGunrock:
As for children that are born here: Why the hell are we granting citizenship to children of illegals (who are probably using the medical system for free) anyway?
Because that's the definition of citizen.
Economic impact: You're assuming that we remove 10 million people from their jobs all at once.
No, not really. Regardless of how fast those workers are removed, they still need to be replaced. There's already been labor issues in Arizona, Colorado, etc., though the decline in housing construction has alleviated it somewhat.
Foreign Relations: With whom? Mexico? Seriously? What are they gonna do? Not let Americans into their border to spend our money in their country? I think not.
It's always a good idea to maintain good relations with your neighbors. These issues don't exist in a vacuum. It's not just Mexico, though, but every country. If the U.S. did begin a large campaign to find and deport illegal immigrants, the international respone would be horrendous, at a time when we can least afford it. But, I take it we're in agreement that such a program would be a Bad Idea.
And yes, many illegal immigrants do pay taxes, even if they don't file. Payroll taxes (social security) are automatically withheld for any wage workers. Sure, many are paid under the table, but I think that is not the norm. Besides, taxes or no, they are still contributing to society, and at the very least that should be recognized and be a mitigating circumstance when considering their status.
The problem is that our current immigration laws don't allow for nearly enough immigrant workers (everything from farm workers to computer engineers) as businesses need.

To Believe, or Not To Believe, that is the Question... (Religion Talk Post)

In regards to the claim that there is no evidence of god, do you discount the subjective spiritual experiences of billions of people? It can be hard to take someone at their word when they claim to have had such an experience, especially if one has never had such an experience oneself. But to discount these experiences is akin to the behavioral psychologists in the middle of the 20th century claiming that consciousness doesn't exist - B. F. Skinner being the most famous (?) proponent. Their reasoning was that there is no objectively verifiable way to detect or measure it. And so, despite their very own subjective experience to the contrary, they claimed consciousness was an illusion. Consciousness is not experimentally verifiable, but I'm pretty convinced it's real and a very good thing!
For the rationalists out there - sit down and read some poetry, fall in love, put your life in danger to protect another's, take a day off of work for no particular reason, or do any of the infinite wonderful things which defy reason. You'll be happier for it.
