Brooks was here (the Shawshank Redemption)
"they send you here for life - and that's exactly what they take"

Being in a cage is an incredibly humbling and dehumanizing experience. Spend even a week in a cage, and your life is forever different. I can't imagine what it's like to spend years in one.

Your wish is my command. Sorry I can't transport you there.

I got to see Bela and the guys at Point State Park in Pittsburgh years ago - and it was a free concert no less! It is so nice to listen to a band in which every member is a virtuoso.

In reply to this comment by Constitutional_Patriot:
They're an amazing group of musicians and I've always been a fan.. I hope I get to see them live someday including a solo by Victor Wooten (bassplayer).

Universal Health Care? Illegal aliens get it, why not us?
Actually, I thought you were suggesting we deport as many as possible as soon as possible. If you're fine with the status quo, what's the problem?

>> ^MarineGunrock:
As for children that are born here: Why the hell are we granting citizenship to children of illegals (who are probably using the medical system for free) anyway?

Because that's the definition of citizen.

Economic impact: You're assuming that we remove 10 million people from their jobs all at once.

No, not really. Regardless of how fast those workers are removed, they still need to be replaced. There's already been labor issues in Arizona, Colorado, etc., though the decline in housing construction has alleviated it somewhat.

Foreign Relations: With whom? Mexico? Seriously? What are they gonna do? Not let Americans into their border to spend our money in their country? I think not.

It's always a good idea to maintain good relations with your neighbors. These issues don't exist in a vacuum. It's not just Mexico, though, but every country. If the U.S. did begin a large campaign to find and deport illegal immigrants, the international respone would be horrendous, at a time when we can least afford it. But, I take it we're in agreement that such a program would be a Bad Idea.

And yes, many illegal immigrants do pay taxes, even if they don't file. Payroll taxes (social security) are automatically withheld for any wage workers. Sure, many are paid under the table, but I think that is not the norm. Besides, taxes or no, they are still contributing to society, and at the very least that should be recognized and be a mitigating circumstance when considering their status.

The problem is that our current immigration laws don't allow for nearly enough immigrant workers (everything from farm workers to computer engineers) as businesses need.

To Believe, or Not To Believe, that is the Question... (Religion Talk Post)
My apologies thinker - I'm doing exactly what you don't want, I know, but I can't help myself. I've somewhat purposefully avoided a yes or no answer, because as I wrote earlier, without knowing what you mean by "God", I can't really answer the question. With respect to a willful/intentional creator entity (particularly one in the image of humans like that espoused by the Abrahamic religions), I'm basically an atheist. But my Catholic upbringing often informs my thoughts on the subject. Beyond that, there is no way I could really describe my belief, because it's not something I tend to think about with words.

To Believe, or Not To Believe, that is the Question... (Religion Talk Post)
TED Prize winner Karen Armstrong's talk about religion and compassion may be even more relevant than the other TED talk I linked above. Perhaps I think that just because she basically says the same thing I said above about religion being used as the excuse for atrocities.

In regards to the claim that there is no evidence of god, do you discount the subjective spiritual experiences of billions of people? It can be hard to take someone at their word when they claim to have had such an experience, especially if one has never had such an experience oneself. But to discount these experiences is akin to the behavioral psychologists in the middle of the 20th century claiming that consciousness doesn't exist - B. F. Skinner being the most famous (?) proponent. Their reasoning was that there is no objectively verifiable way to detect or measure it. And so, despite their very own subjective experience to the contrary, they claimed consciousness was an illusion. Consciousness is not experimentally verifiable, but I'm pretty convinced it's real and a very good thing!

For the rationalists out there - sit down and read some poetry, fall in love, put your life in danger to protect another's, take a day off of work for no particular reason, or do any of the infinite wonderful things which defy reason. You'll be happier for it.

What Religion Was Supposed to be About (From TED 2008)
I think her idea of the charter has some merit. But I think it would be more successful as a bottom-up campaign, rather than top-down. Basically, go grass roots around world with it, instead of starting at the U.N. and with the big religious leaders of the world.
