I'm that annoying friend. I put TWO packets of mild sauce on my Taco Bell, my friends can't handle it and I eat my lunch with a superior and knowing smirk, although I sweat a bit.

I hear spicy food is addictive as it raises the endorphin levels. So it's not necessarily showing off, but just craving the rush of it I would think. I love spicy food!
